Before placing down any type of flooring – whether it be paint, tile, carpet, or wood – you need to put down a waterproofing primer. Far too many homeowners find out the hard way that water and moisture are problems that develope over time. Just because the concrete isn’t showing signs now, doesn’t mean you won’t ever have issues. As concrete ages, the pores become larger and water and moisture which most likely have always been present, start to penetrate through the concrete.
When choosing a waterproofing primer, you want to make sure the primer does not coat the concrete. When you use a primer that coats the concrete you chance the mastic, glues, or other bonding agents not being able to the concrete. Another factor you need to consider when choosing a primer is how long the primer lasts for. A primer that has a life span of two years won’t do you any good unless you plan on ripping up and reinstalling your flooring every few years.
Silicate-based sealers have always made the best primers simply because they chemically react and don’t leave behind any coatings. Learn more about silicates.
