Stamped concrete patios can be sealed with a sealer or a coating. While they might be marketed as being the same, the two categories of products are very different.
Stamped Concrete Patio Sealer: Penetrating sealers work below the surface and will not change the look or color of the concrete. The most common type of sealer for stamped concrete is a silane siloxane water repellent. It will repel surface water and other liquids and protect the concrete from water, snow, salt and ice damage.
Manufacturers:
- Foundation Armor SX5000: 40% solids, DOT approved solvent based silane siloxane
- Okon S-20: 20% solids water based silane siloxane.
- Prosoco Silane PD: 20% solids water based silane.
Stamped Concrete Patio Coatings: Coatings will enhance the surface with a stain sheen or gloss finish. The most common type of coating for stamped concrete is an acrylic. Within the acrylic category there are several types so it is important to look into the chemical make up, expected life and support. Consider solvent over water based simply because solvent based acrylics are easier to apply and maintain.
